Abstract

Throughout its history, Serbia, due to its rich military tradition, numerous sacrifices and significant victories that were known even beyond its borders, has always shown great respect for the army and the military profession. Due to frequent changes in the name of the state, political system, territory and various internal and external circumstances, the Serbian army has disappeared and been re-formed several times over time. One of the questions that has been asked for centuries is whether the army should be professional (standing) or popular, based on general military obligation. This question falls within the field of study of civil-military relations.
